Volchar unveils 40A smart EV charger for the home

Volchar's latest contribution to the EV charging market comes in the form of its up-to-9.6 kilowatt (kW), 240V outlet for the home.

The charger provides interoperable charging options for drivers of cars brands including Ford, Audi, Jaguar and Chevrolet thanks to its J1772 charging plug

It is UV-resistant and NEMA 4-rated "for maximum protection from harsh weather". The charger has universal EV compatibility in the US - except for Teslas.

Volchar asserts that it can make a name for itself on the EV charging market with its line of durable, waterproof yet compact outlets for home or work. Its latest model is for the former, and is for those with car power needs that can be served with a Level 2 output.

It is rated to boost interoperable charging options for those who drive cars from brands such as Ford, Audi, Jaguar and Chevrolet thanks to its J1772 charging plug (although Tesla owners will, of course, need an adapter).
Volchar is confident that these EV users will appreciate the new charger's UX, with a handle finished in "premium comfortable rubber" connected to a 25-foot cable "that stays flexible" even in temperatures that drop to -30°C.

The new Volchar charger is also touted to save the owner money, as it can be configured to charge in accordance with different "plans" that leverage the ideal electricity rates, if applicable. This can be done in its app, which can also act as a "Smart Remote Control" for the accessory.

On the other hand, it has the NEMA 14-50 plug type, which means it is restricted to 40 amps (40A) of input. It is listed on volchar.com at its recommended price of US$659 ahead of its release, but is currently selling for just US$539 at Walmart now.

The EV industry is continually buzzing about adoption – much of it geared toward passenger vehicles. Will the public buy in, literally and figuratively? Are EV purchases on track? Will consumers overcome the anxiety that their vehicle’s battery charge will be insufficient to complete a journey or that there will not be enough charging stations on the way to their destination? As these questions are being asked about passenger vehicles, fleets are quietly moving toward EV adoption.

Range anxiety is not the main issue for EV drivers, it's 'destination desperation'. Most public AC chargers do not accept contactless payments, and the myriad of different operators usually require drivers to set up an account and download an app. The situation is ridiculous and acting as a deterrent to EV ownership, argues Colin Sowman.
