Logistics UK responds to government’s EV smart charging action plan

The UK government’s EV Charging Plan, reported here last week, should be able to accommodate the needs of commercial vans, to ensure it is fit for purpose, according to logistics industry association Logistics UK.

The Electric Vehicle Smart Charging Action Plan sets out steps being taken to seize on the significant potential of smart charging and make it the preferred method of long duration charging by 2025.

And to back this up further, the government announced £16m funding from the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) for technologies that harness the potential of smart charging. Among the technologies is a smart street lamppost which will enable motorists to access smart charging on the move.
 
If UK logistics businesses are to achieve Net Zero by 2030 in line with the government’s stated objectives, Logistics UK, one of the UK’s leading business groups representing logistics businesses, says it is vital that the nation’s smart charging infrastructure can provide the necessary accessibility and capacity the UK’s fleet will require. The organisation says that The Electric Vehicle Charging Plan provides welcome detail for operators, and its members are pleased to see government and Ofgem working to remove barriers to innovative charging technology.  

“However, it is vital that the roll out of the public charging network is accelerated, and that it should be able to accommodate the needs of commercial vans, to ensure it is fit for purpose. Longer term, we are also urging government to ensure larger electric HGVs can be accommodated by any new infrastructure, to keep vehicles moving and supplies being delivered,” a statement from Logistics UK states.

    Lhyfe says that, despite concerns about the pace of development of the green hydrogen sector in Europe, thr group has managed to hold its own thanks to a strategy that is clearly paying off, and continues to grow nicely.
