Arcadis has published a new global report that assesses the current situation in rollouts of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The Arcadis Global Charging Infrastructure Market Report compares the market conditions across 21 regions, and builds upon the 2021 Global Electric Vehicle Catalyst Index utilising new metrics and parameters including the economic maturity and returns potential on investment in these regions.

The report found that in terms of electric vehicles (EVs) per capita Norway is the global leader with 118 EVs per 1,000 people, with EVs accounting for 64.5% of vehicles. The rest of Europe is catching up with a broad range of incentives for EVs that can push the average market share for the region up to 13%. Meanwhile other regions are falling behind, such as Asia Pacific and Latin America, with less than 2% of EV market share.

Arcadis engaged with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and its members in compiling the report which can be downloaded here.

Arcadis says that, as the world advances towards the future of clean energy emission and countries move away from internal combustion engine vehicles, more investment is needed in the charging infrastructure to enable a faster and smoother transition for both fleet operators and individual consumers.

EVs or e-bikes: what is the future path for sustainable urban transport?

That was the gist of the argument in a provocative Financial Times opinion piece published this month by Paris-based journalist Simon Kuper. But is he right, and what are the implications for the ongoing rollout of EVs and the required charging infrastructure?
